We talked to one of our new colleagues: Allec Hijlkema, an ambitious Dutchman who moved to Spain for his internship at QGROUP. How did he find his first month in recruitment? From first impressions to his goals for the coming period: this is his story.

How was your first month?

Great. Intense too, but I have learned an enormous amount and I am taking in everything I can. Recruitment surprised me in many ways, especially in what organisations are really looking for in a candidate. It is much more nuanced than I thought: you have to understand roles, recognise the right skills and judge whether someone fits into a team. Every day is a new opportunity to learn, and that makes it both challenging and fun.

What was your first impression of QGROUP?

Very positive. I had already met the team twice before I started, so most faces were familiar. What attracted me is that it is a sector I had never worked in before; I actually found stepping outside my comfort zone interesting. The young energy in the team creates a great atmosphere. You can feel that people want to achieve something together, and that makes it easy to collaborate and share ideas.

Did your tasks match your expectations?

Completely. I am well prepared for my work. The onboarding was thorough, so from the start I felt confident about what was expected of me. I really enjoy my tasks, such as outreach and contact with candidates. Because the expectations were clear, the transition went very smoothly.

What did you mainly focus on in your first month?

Mainly on cold calling and searching for profiles via LinkedIn Recruiter. I schedule interviews and keep in direct contact with candidates, which is very rewarding. I also keep a close eye on the team's KPIs. Knowing where you stand is important, and I like how everyone works towards the goals together. That hands-on approach means I am learning fast.

How are things with your team?

Great. We get on well with each other and so far it has been a fantastic experience. The culture is special: we have a laugh together over a beer, but we also know exactly when it is time to work in a focused and professional way. That balance makes the work enjoyable and productive.

What surprised you about the company and the sector?

Mainly the salaries of some of the IT roles we look for candidates for. I had not expected certain roles to be paid so well, and that gave me a new perspective on IT recruitment. I was also taken aback by the number of recruiters in the market. There is a lot of competition, and that shows how important it is to stand out with good service to clients and candidates alike.

What were your biggest challenges?

Keeping my planning tight. Sometimes I spent too long on one task, so I did not get round to other things. I have consciously worked on that, and I have already become much better at prioritising and dividing my time well.

How has your manager helped you?

From day one he was there for me and I could go to him with all my questions. His feedback is always constructive; he is more of a coach than a manager. That guidance has helped me enormously to overcome obstacles and grow in my role.

What are your goals for the coming months?

Making my first placement. I have come close, but it has not happened yet. I know it takes time, but I am persevering. Every conversation brings me a step closer, and I am looking forward to helping candidates into a great new job.

What do you like most about your workplace?

The team. Working with such a young, driven group is incredibly refreshing. We are on the same wavelength and the balance between fun and professionalism is just right. That creates a positive atmosphere in which collaboration and new ideas come naturally.
